Stir Thyself

“And there is no one who calls on Your name,
Who stirs himself up to take hold of You;
For You have hidden Your face from us,
And have consumed us because of our iniquities. ” Is. 64:7 (NKJV)

At first glance, it would appear Isaiah is saying that there is no one who stirs themselves up BECAUSE God has hidden His face. The complete opposite is true! God has hidden His face BECAUSE there is no one who stirs themselves or calls on the name of God. Isaiah is saying that he knows no one is calling on the name of the Lord because God is hiding His face and letting the sins of the people consume them! Replace the word “For” with “Therefore” and it makes much more sense in our modern thinking! What is the secret then in seeing the face of God?
Stir yourself up and take hold of God! As a result, God will show us His face and not let us be overcome by our sins or iniquities.
“How can we stir ourselves up?” You may ask, “and what in the world does stir mean?” GREAT question! haha! And what better way to understand than to look at the original Hebrew language!

uwr [H5782] – To awaken, arise, be alert, watchful (IN OPPOSITION TO BOTH SLEEP AND IDLENESS)

Now, in light of this definition how does it change the passage above? Now we get the idea that God wants us to awaken ourselves. He wants us to be OPPOSED to SLEEP AND IDLENESS! Our relationship with God is both alive and active! God wants to talk to us and act through us all the time! God wants us to stay active and aware at all times! How can we do this though with activities and distractions all around us? I believe Ephesians 5:18-21
“.. but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.”
This verse pretty much deals with our whole day! Singing songs in our hearts when we’re alone.. and when we’re with friends.. we sing to each other.. we can also give thanks for everything and we submit to each other and not hold ourselves higher than we are! We submit to each other so that we don’t cultivate a spirit of pride within ourselves!

In conclusion, we see the following: We must continue to ACTIVELY pursue God and continue to live in Him throughout our day and not just on Sundays or during church! Stir your Spirits constantly that He might be able to speak to us. Keep an listening ear and an open heart and we will begin to see the Lord working in great ways!
